From Tarrazú to Your Cup — Stories from Bürejake & Kwiso Farms
Every bag of Pura Vida Coffee begins with a place and a person. We source exclusively from the Tarrazú region of Costa Rica, one of the most celebrated coffee-growing areas in the world, and from two farms whose commitment to quality is extraordinary: Bürejake and Kwiso.
This is their story.
Why Tarrazú?
Tarrazú sits in the mountains south of San José, at elevations between 1,200 and 1,900 metres above sea level. The combination of volcanic soil, cool nights, and a distinct dry season creates ideal conditions for slow cherry development, which means more complex sugars, more nuanced acidity, and deeper flavour in the cup.
Costa Rica has long been a pioneer in specialty coffee. It was one of the first countries to legally prohibit the production of low-quality Robusta, ensuring that every bean grown here meets a higher standard. Tarrazú is the crown jewel of that tradition.
Bürejake Farm
Bürejake is a small, family-run farm nestled in the hills of Tarrazú. The name itself reflects the deep roots the family has in this land, generations of knowledge passed down through careful observation of the seasons, the soil, and the trees.
What makes Bürejake special is their willingness to experiment. Alongside traditional varieties, they cultivate the prized Geisha, a variety originally from Ethiopia that thrives at high altitude and produces a cup of extraordinary delicacy, with jasmine, peach, and bergamot notes that are unlike anything else in the coffee world.
They also produce a stunning SL-28 Red Honey, a Kenyan variety processed using the honey method, where some of the fruit mucilage is left on the bean during drying, adding sweetness and body to the final cup.

Kwiso Farm
Kwiso Farm sits at a slightly higher elevation, where the cool mountain air slows the ripening of the coffee cherries even further. This extra time on the tree is one of the reasons Kwiso coffees have such pronounced sweetness and complexity.
The team at Kwiso has embraced both traditional and innovative processing methods. Their Natural Process coffees, where the whole cherry is dried intact, produce a fruit-forward, wine-like cup that has become a favourite among specialty coffee lovers. Their Anaerobic lots push the boundaries further: cherries are fermented in sealed tanks without oxygen, creating intense, layered flavours that are unlike anything produced by conventional methods.
And then there is the Kwiso Geisha, perhaps the most sought-after coffee we offer. Grown at altitude, processed with precision, and expressing the full potential of this legendary variety.
