How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Specialty Coffee
At Pura Vida Coffee, we believe that great coffee starts at the farm but it's finished in your kitchen. The beans we source from Tarrazú, Costa Rica carry extraordinary flavour potential, and the right brewing method unlocks every note the farmer worked so hard to develop.
Here's a guide to the most popular brewing methods and how to get the best from your specialty coffee.
Pour Over (V60 / Chemex)
Pour over is the method of choice for tasting the full complexity of a single-origin coffee. The slow, controlled pour gives you clarity and brightness, perfect for our Geisha from Kwiso Farm, where floral and stone-fruit notes shine through.
- Grind: Medium-fine (like coarse sand)
- Water temp: 92–94°C
- Ratio: 1:15 (e.g. 15g coffee to 225ml water)
- Brew time: 2.5–3.5 minutes
Tip: Bloom your grounds with twice the weight of water for 30 seconds before your main pour. This releases CO₂ and opens up the flavour.
French Press
French press produces a full-bodied, rich cup, ideal for our natural-process coffees like the Kwiso Natural or Catuai Natural from Bürejake Farm, where the immersion brewing amplifies the fruit-forward sweetness.
- Grind: Coarse
- Water temp: 93–96°C
- Ratio: 1:12
- Brew time: 4 minutes
Tip: After pressing, pour immediately to avoid over-extraction.
AeroPress
The AeroPress is wonderfully versatile, you can brew it like an espresso concentrate or a clean filter coffee. It's forgiving and fast, making it a great everyday brewer. Try it with our Honey Process Tarrazú for a sweet, syrupy cup.
- Grind: Medium (standard) or fine (inverted/espresso-style)
- Water temp: 85–92°C
- Ratio: 1:10 to 1:16 depending on style
- Brew time: 1–2 minutes
Espresso
Espresso demands precision but rewards you with intensity and crema. Our anaerobic-process coffees, like the Anaerobic Kwiso, are particularly exciting as espresso, delivering complex, wine-like depth in a small shot.
- Grind: Fine
- Water temp: 90–94°C
- Ratio: 1:2 (e.g. 18g in, 36g out)
- Brew time: 25–30 seconds
The Golden Rules
Whatever method you choose, these principles always apply:
- Fresh beans: Grind just before brewing for maximum aroma.
- Filtered water: Coffee is 98% water, quality matters.
- Clean equipment: Old coffee oils turn rancid and ruin flavour.
- Experiment: Specialty coffee rewards curiosity. Adjust one variable at a time.
